Sightseeing in Berlin
The Brandenburg Gate. This is the point from which most people usually start their tour of Berlin. Visible from various points around Berlin, this grandiose neoclassical gate, inspired by the gate of the Acropolis of Athens, was designed by the architect of the Prussian court Carl Gotthard Langhans. During the Cold War, the Brandenburg Gate was a symbol of division but since the fall of the Berlin Wall it has become a unifying symbol of the city. In 1793 it was crowned with the statute of a Quadriga.
Address: Pariser Platz.
Very close to the Brandenburg Gate is the Holocaust Monument, which you must visit.
Berlin Television Tower. The tower was built in 1969 in order to send the message of the superiority of the communist system. Today is a Berlin landmark. “Clamber” up its 368 metres to take the most impressive selfie of your lives. In the “spherical” restaurant that is located just before its peak, at 207 metres, you can enjoy your meal while being served the best view in the city!
Address: Panoramastraße 1A.
The Berlin Cathedral (Berliner Dom) with its grand dome, a characteristic example of 19th-century architecture. Inside you will be able to admire its ornate decoration.
Address: Am Lustgarten.
The Berlin Wall. A few sections still remain upright while on its east side there is today an open-air gallery, 1.3 kilometres long, which awaits to be discovered (East Side Gallery). Immediately after the fall of the wall, 118 artists from 21 countries began to paint its remains, offering a commentary on this historic event. Take a stop to photograph the Kiss of Soviet Brotherhood between Brezhnev and Honecker, the most famous work in the gallery. It is the reproduction of a candid photograph taken in 1979 during the celebrations for the thirtieth anniversary of the foundation of the German Democratic Republic.
Address: Mühlenstrasse, www.eastsidegallery-berlin.de.
Take a stop in Potsdamer Square (Potsdamer Platz), with its impressive skyscrapers and countless shops.
The Reichstag, once a symbol of the power of the Reich, is today the seat of the Federal Republic of Germany. Its amazing glass dome is particularly striking.
Address: Platz der Republik, www.bundestag.de.
Alexanderplatz. This was always the most vibrant part of the city, with shops, cinemas, restaurants and other sights. It was named in honour of Tsar Alexander I, who visited the Prussian capital in 1805.
Museum Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the middle of the River Spree, on the banks of which Berlin is built. The island is home to the Altes Museum (Old Museum) and the Neues Museum (New Museum), the Pergamon Museum (with Greek and Babylonian antiquities), the Bode Museum and the Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery).
Address: Am Lustgarten 1, www.smb.spk-berlin.de
Useful tip: If you wish to visit many museums then buy a three-day museum pass. It costs 29 euros (14.50 euros reduced) and offers you free entry into all the city's museums for three days. It's worth it!

Things to do in Berlin
Visit the German Spy Museum. This museum was opened to the public in 2015 and it takes the visitor on espionage missions through its exhibits – faithful reproductions of the equipment of a secret agent from another era, revealing the secrets of espionage.
Address: Leipziger Platz 9, https://www.deutsches-spionagemuseum.de/en/museum/
If you have children then you must visit Berlin Zoo, which is one of the oldest in Germany.
Address: Hardenbergplatz 8.

Excursions
In the wider region of Brandenburg, where the colours green and blue prevail, you must go for a boat or a canoe ride as the 30,000 kilometres of waterways offer a spectacular sight. You can take a swim in many of the lakes around here, while Müggelsee is considered the most impressive of all.
This area is also considered a paradise for cyclists. There are over 7,000 kilometres of smooth bicycle lanes that literally invite the cyclist to hop on the train and to get out in the countryside around Berlin and then to return to Berlin by bike!
Shopping in Berlin
The heart of entertainment and shopping in Berlin beats in Friedrichstraße as well as the futuristic Potsdamer Square. The large international brands are concentrated around Kurfürstendamm Avenue and in the KaDeWe, the largest department store in continental Europe. If you love shopping then you must put these on your list of places to visit.
If you come across one of the many bazaars in the city don’t hesitate to mingle with the Berliners and discover for yourself the stalls selling antiques, interesting souvenirs and eccentric clothes.
Food and Entertainment
The multicultural character of the city is reflected in its cuisine. Here you will find dozens of ethnic restaurants, created with love by the immigrants who live and work in Berlin: Turkish, Greek, Thai, Indian, Italian, etc. One very important advantage of the city is that you can find excellent quality food at great prices everywhere.
Having spent all day wandering around the sights and museums of the city, and having nibbled something at the food stalls selling the famous wurst (sausage) or currywurst (curried sausage) that can be found literally everywhere, then you must take a stroll to Tiergarten Park (a space created in 1833-40 as royal hunting grounds) to sip a refreshing beer at one of the many beer gardens. In the summer the beer gardens sprout like mushrooms and are an integral part of the Berlin summer.
Getting from the airport to Berlin
The easiest and quickest way to get to Berlin from Tegel Airport is by taxi. Alternatively, take bus TXL in the direction of Alexanderplatz or the X9 in the direction of the Zoo. The city’s railway network (S-Bahn and U-Bahn) does not go as far as the airport. From the airport the bus for Alexanderplatz has a journey time of 45 minutes while that for the Zoo has a journey time of 20 minutes.
