To Frankfurt
Plan your trip to Frankfurt
Towns that have rivers run through them have their own distinct charm and Germany’s financial capital of Frankfurt is no exception. The image of the cityscape is somewhat of a contradiction, however, as, next to the traditional, wooden German buildings along the River Main there are towering skyscrapers!
Frankfurt is considered a city of contrasts and this is due not just to its architectural contrasts but also to the diversity of its population as the city is home to over 180 different ethnicities.
The city is also known as Bankfurt as it is the location for dozens of powerful banks as well as the European Central Bank. It is famous for the large exhibitions that are held here in its huge exhibition grounds (Messe Frankfurt), such as the International Motor Show (mid-September) and the largest publishing event on the planet, the famous Frankfurt Book Fair (mid-October).
With 60 museums and dozens of galleries, Frankfurt is a delight for arts lovers – not for nothing is it known as the City of Museums! One of the best periods to visit the city, and Germany in general, is Christmas time as the decorations will make you feel as though you are in a scene from a fairy tale!
Book your flights now for Frankfurt at Olympic Air’s site and land in Europe’s financial capital, as you enjoy a wonderful travel experience.

Sightseeing in Frankfurt
The Alte Oper, the old opera house, with exceptional acoustics and which hosts over 300 concerts and events each year (Address: 11 Untermainanlage, https://oper-frankfurt.de/) and the graceless skyscrapers that are reminiscent of New York (the area is known as Manhattan as the hyper-modern glass skyscrapers reflect the waters of the River Main, a tributary of the Rhine). Main Tower, 200 metres high, is the most famous skyscraper in Frankfurt.
Address: 52 – 58 Neue Mainzer Straße.
In the medieval centre of Frankfurt, you can admire the cobbled Römerberg Square, the famous fountain, known as “The Spring of Justice” (Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen), the Old St Nicholas church, the Old Town Hall (Römer) and the historic Frankfurt Cathedral.
Very close to Old Town Square is the Goethe House. This is the house in which the great German author was born in 1749 and where he spent his early years. Today it is home to a wonderful museum. On the building’s third floor is the poet’s “study room”, where he planned early versions of, among other works, his famous “Faust”.
Address: 23-25 Großer Hirschgraben.
Housed in an iconic building, a postmodern masterpiece designed by Hans Hollein, the Museum für Moderne Kunst (Museum of Modern Art) hosts one of the world’s most important collections of contemporary art. The collection contains over 5000 works of art (painting, sculpture, cinema, photography and performance art) by leading international artists, such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Joseph Beuys.

Don’t miss in Frankfurt
If the weather is good, then go for a walk along the banks of the River Main. The only disadvantage is that the nicer the weather then the busier it will be here, with young and old playing games from football to frisbee! Walk over the iron footbridge of Frankfurt (Eiserner Steg), which spans the River Main, and stand for a moment to read the words of Homer from the “Odyssey”: “SAILING OVER THE WINE-DARK SEA WITH MEN OF STRANGE SPEECH”. A charming way in which to admire the sights along the river is to take a cruise in one of the boats that sail along it. The cruise lasts one hour and the boats depart next to the Eiserner Steg.

Many of the city’s museums are concentrated along the Museum Embankment (Museumsufer), by both banks of the River Main. A visit to the Staedel Museum, home to seven centuries of the treasures of European Art, is a must. Among the exhibits here are works by Rembrandt, Tintoretto, Renoir, Dürer, Holbein, Monet, Cézanne and Rubens. It is no coincidence that it is considered one of the most important art galleries in the world.
Address: 63 Schaumainkai, https://www.staedelmuseum.de
It is worth visiting the Palmengarten, the Botanical Garden of Frankfurt, home to over 6000 plants from all over the world. In the historic Palm House, an elegant iron and glass structure 18 metres tall, you can admire a tropical palm tree forest literally in the centre of Europe!
Address: 61 Siesmayerstraße.
The Frankfurt Christmas Market is one of the oldest and most beautiful in the whole of Germany. During the Christmas season, the centre of the Old Town and Römerberg Square, as well as Paulsplatz, are transformed into a charming festive market, flooded with the aromas of baked apples, walnuts, gingerbread and mulled wine.

Excursions near Frankfurt
Beautiful Heidelberg awaits you eighty km from the centre of Frankfurt, set within lush green hills. Known as the heart of the German intellectual activity of the past and today too and famous for its university, Heidelberg is especially beautiful and it is no exaggeration to call it a jewel of Renaissance architecture. Aside from its medieval old town, which will make you feel like the hero in a romantic tale, it is worth seeing the old stone Karl Theodor Bridge, which spans the River Neckar, as well as the town’s castle.
The Rhine Valley, the fairy-tale scene on the banks of this historic river, with its forty medieval castles and palaces, is one that will stay with you forever. Embark on one of the many tourist riverboats and enjoy an unforgettable cruise. Although the full length of the river is around 1,320 km, the most striking part of it is that between the German cities of Bingen and Koblenz. Since 2002, this area has been inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Shopping
Zeil Street is considered the point where the heart of shopping in Frankfurt beats as a huge variety of shops can be found here. Similarly, the slogan of the city’s shopping malls (MyZeil, Nordwestzentrum, HessenCenter and Skyline Plaza Frankfurt) is “shop until you drop”.
The stores of the famous luxury fashion houses are concentrated along Goethestrasse, while in the independent boutiques along Berger, Brückenstrasse and Schweizer Street you will find clothes and shoes by local designers.
Buy leather goods, bags, wallets and belts, as this area has a long tradition in their manufacture, as well as a Bembel, the traditional earthenware jug used for serving apple wine in Frankfurt. This is useful if you consider that it keeps its contents cold in the summer months. If you love beer, do not forget to buy one of the famous one-litre beer glasses, made either of glass or clay.
Food and entertainment
Do not leave Frankfurt without having tried the famous sausages, which are served with a cold green sauce of mayonnaise, yoghurt and various herbs. The famous local dish is Saumagen: pork stomach, filled with pork meat, potatoes, carrots and onions and which is then sliced and fried. Wash it down with a glass of Ebbelwoi (local apple wine), which is served cold in the summer and warm in the winter.
Frankfurt is considered the home of techno and electronic music and the city’s clubs often host some of the world’s most famous DJs. Sachsenhausen, to the south of the River Main, is considered one of the places with an exceptionally vibrant nightlife and here you will also find many pubs that serve apple wine.
