To Hanover

Travelling to Hannover

Built on the banks of the River Leine, Hannover is a typical city of Saxon Germany. While its direct connection with its medieval past may have been lost by WWII bombing, Hannover was rebuilt without ever forgetting its past.

Although it may not match the charm of its neighbouring cities of Bremen and Hamburg, Hannover has managed to profile itself as an ideal modern metropolis with its exceptional quality of life, low cost of living, multitude of excellent museums and great cultural wealth, and green legacy.

Considered as one of the leading exhibition and conference centres in the world, every summer thousands of people attend the CeBit and Hannover Messe science and technology trade fairs, each of which attracts more than 200,000 visitors to the city.

Book your flight to Hannover on Olympic Air’s site and discover the greenest city in Germany!

Worth visiting

Herrenhäusen Gärten. Proof that Hannover’s claim to fame is not only as a trade fair and conference venue are the majestic Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen, an exquisite example of 17th century baroque gardening modelled on the gardens of Versailles!

Sprengel Museum Hannover. Impressive in both architectural design and the contents of its collections, Hannover’s Modern Art Museum deserves to be at the top of your list of museums to visit. It houses a rich collection of 20th century works of art from painting and abstract art to conceptual art. Among others, you will admire works by Chagall, Picasso, Léger, Warhol, Bourgeois.

Historische Museum Hannover. The History Museum of Hannover records the history of the city from its establishment (1100) to this day, as well as the general history of Lower Saxony.

Landesmuseum. The ‘’Lower Saxony State Museum’’ as it is collectively known, comprises the Archaeology, Natural History and Ethnology departments and the State Gallery (Landesgalerie) and a Coin Gallery. It impresses with the size and range of its exhibits, where Rembrandt and Rubens meet dinosaurs and artefacts from ancient civilisations.

Museum Schloss Herrenhäusen. The Herrenhausen Palace Museum is housed in a palace dating back to the beginning of the 19th century which was destroyed in WWII and totally rebuilt. It hosts exhibitions relating to the history of Hannover when it was a glorious seat of the British Empire.

Wilhelm Busch - German Museum for Caricature and Drawings. Dedicated to the art of caricature and satire, this museum houses more than 40,000 works by famous artists of the genre, from around the world. Of particular interest is the ‘’Golden Era’’ collection of British satire and the work by innovative German comics artist Wilhelm Busch (1832-1908).

Neues Rathaus. Built in 1913, by lake Maschsee, the majestic New Town Hall is an excellent example of old Hannover eclectic architecture from the time of Wilhelm II. A lift will take you to the top of the green dome, where you can enjoy the panoramic view of Maschpark park.

Kulturzentrum Faust is a former factory complex that was transformed into a huge cultural space hosting music, art, film and book events.

Marktkirche. The largest, and oldest, Lutheran church in the city, was built with bricks in the 14th century and is an excellent example of Gothic architecture. It suffered great damage during WWII and was restored in 1952.

Altes Rathaus: One of the oldest buildings in the city, the medieval Old Town Hall, took over a century to complete, starting in 1455. Very few of its original pieces survived following the allied bombing and it was extensively restored from copies.

Berggarten. Is the city’s oldest botanical garden with plants from all over the world and an avenue lined with 300-year-old linden trees leading to the mausoleum of King George I of England.

Maschsee: The huge artificial lake in the heart of Hannover was designed in 1930 during the early Nazi times and has been a favourite place for recreation, for locals and visitors alike, ever since. The perfect spot for a picnic, jogging, rowing, pedal-boating, and, in the spring and summer, boat rides.
