To Helsinki

Travelling to Helsinki

Cool, refined and stylish, Helsinki is a modern European city of architectural experimentation, modern design, art and new gastronomy.

With its unique geography next to the sea and with cultural influences from East and West, the Finnish capital can boast of uniquely alternating scenery and experiences. From the wonderful waterfront of the old harbour, with a view of the ferryboats that connect the islands, to the stunning art nouveau buildings of the district of Katajanokka, and from the 19th-century neoclassical Senate square to the exquisite interwar cafés, the green Esplanadi boulevard and the stylish Design district, Helsinki is a city of unique beauty and continuous surprises.

Find the best offers on flights to Helsinki at the Olympic Air site and discover the special charm of the “Daughter of the Baltic”.

The best things to do in Helsinki

Take a stroll in the harbour with the wonderful waterfront cafes and the view of the boats that connect its various islands.

Explore the magnificent Senate Square, with its 19th-century neoclassical buildings and discover the city’s Tsarist history. Pause to admire the elegant white Helsinki Cathedral (1852), which dominates the square.

Visit the atmospheric circular Temppeliaukio Church, also known as the Church of the Rock (1969). “Carved” into the natural granite rock and covered by a bronze dome, its acoustic standards are exemplary, and it hosts many concerts.

Visit the city’s emblematic railway station, designed by the famous architect Eliel Saarinen.

Don’t miss the emblematic Ateneum Art Museum, where you can admire the largest collection of art in Finland, with over 20,000 works dating from 1750 to 1950.

Admire the stunning modern building of the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, the most important contemporary art gallery in Finland.

Enjoy a walk through the wonderful urban parks of the city, such as Esplanadi Park in the heart of Helsinki and Kaivopuisto along the coast.

You must visit Sibelius Park to admire the monumental sculpture/church organ (1967) that is named after the great composer and which “sings” in the wind.

Unique experiences in Helsinki

Enjoy a coffee in the tents pitched in the picturesque Market Square and then take a ferryboat to the little island of Suomenlinna. Also known as the “Gibraltar of the North”, it is home to one of the largest maritime fortresses (1748) in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the various buildings of the fortress you will find restaurants, cafes, a brewery and six museums.

Enjoy a rare form of relaxation and revival in the Kotiharjun Sauna, the only wood sauna in Helsinki, which dates to 1928.

Visit the Linnanmäki Amusement Park, the most popular amusement park in Finland, which opened in 1950. Take a ride on the old-fashioned wooden rollercoaster, which is filled with the nostalgic atmosphere of a bygone era.

The best shopping in Helsinki

Discover the Finnish passion for design in the Design District, a vast district (spread out over 25 roads) which encloses over 200 shops specialising in fashion, design and decoration (Punavuori and Kamppi), jewellery and clothing boutiques, antique stores and art galleries (Kruununhaka and Ullanlinna) and whatever else you can think of that has to do with contemporary design.

Visit Aleksanterinkatu (Aleksi) where you will find Stockmann Mall (the largest department store in the Nordic countries, with international luxury brands) and the recently renovated Kluuvi Shopping Centre, with top international labels and excellent local brands.

Stroll along the aristocratic Esplanadi (Espa) boulevard, with its expensive exclusive boutiques.

Head for Itis, the largest shopping mall in the whole city (and in the whole of the Nordics), with over 300 shops and restaurants.

Explore the main streets of Mannerheimintie, Pohjois and Eteläesplanadi for famous Finnish brands (Iittala, Marimekko and more).

Take a trip to the famous open-air market in Market Square (Kauppatori) in the south port, with its charming atmosphere and endless choices in fresh traditional delicacies and souvenirs.

For quality souvenirs, handicrafts and excellent delicatessens, don’t miss the covered Hakaniemi Market Hall, with around 70 shops over two floors.

Eating in Helsinki

In recent years, the city’s gastronomic culture has really taken off, with experiments in the spirit of the “New Nordic Cuisine”, which is based on simple seasonal ingredients and authentic flavours.

According to the season, you can try dishes based on game (smoked reindeer), fish (wild salmon, herrings), fruits (berries from the Arctic forest), wild greens and herbs as well as local cheeses. Even though dining in a good restaurant can be an expensive affair, especially in the city centre, the lunch menus of many bistros and cafés offer great food at reasonable prices.

You can sample some excellent seasonal delicacies at the food stalls in the open-air food markets, such as Market Square and Hakaniemi Market Hall.

The nightlife of Helsinki takes place between the trendy bars, cocktail lounges, live venues and dance music clubs. Most are concentrated in the city centre as well as in the districts of Kamppi, Punavuori and Kallio.
