To Kavala
Plan your trip to Kavala
Kavala, one of the most beautiful cities of Macedonia, is built on a semi-circular plan on the slopes of Mountain Symvolo, in a strategic location since it connects the West and the East by both land and sea.
Its centuries-old history dates back to the prehistoric age and it was once the Mecca of tobacco, with a bourgeois past. Called Neapolis in antiquity and then Byzantine Christoupolis, Kavala is every bit as magical today.
With its picturesque Old Town, medieval castle, imposing aqueduct, the protected Ottoman buildings, pretty little churches, narrow cobbled streets, beautiful sandy beaches, mountain villages of Pangaio, Kavala steadfastly retains the visitors’ interest.
Book airline tickets for Kavala with Olympic Air and land in a modern city with a multicultural air and a very rich past.

Sightseeing
For a genuine experience of the city of Kavala, start by taking a walk in the picturesque Old City, the small peninsula that has been continually inhabited since the 7th century B.C.. Narrow streets, beautiful squares, Ottoman-style buildings, mosques and churches, accompany your steps in this beautiful, historical area.
Make a stop in the square with the bronze statue of Mehmet Ali near to his house, a typical example of Ottoman architecture. You should definitely take a stroll from Kapnergati square, where you will find the Municipal Tobacco Warehouse, to aristocratic Averoff street full of beautiful neoclassical buildings, and paved Kyprou street as far as the Municipal Garden.
A monument symbol of Kavala, the gigantic arched structure of the aqueduct, also known as ‘’Kamares’’ (arches), which was built by Ibrahim Pasha in 1520-1530 during the reconstruction period of the city, was a vital project. The aqueduct of length 270m and maximum height 25m supplied water to Kavala through the region of Suyol (su-yol: ‘’waterway’’) until the early 20th century. Today the Kamares are no longer of vital importance, but they still retain their beauty and grandeur as a city landmark.
On the Panagia peninsula, within the city walls, towers the mighty Imaret. An excellent example of Islamic architecture, with the characteristic lead domes, the Imaret was built in 1817 by Mehmet Ali Pasha as a “gift” to his birthplace Kavala. It used to be a Muslim theology school, boarding school and charitable institution with many rooms, a mosque, kitchens and wonderful inner courtyards. Today, the Imaret offers the fantastic experience of unique accommodation, as it currently operates as a luxury hotel, the first in Greece to be run in an authentic historic site. However, you can visit the public areas of the monument by taking part in a guided tour that lasts for 30 minutes. Tours are held every half hour from 10:00 to 16:30.
