To Larnaka
Plan your trip to Larnaka
Larnaka (or Larnaca), with its many monuments, excellent tourist infrastructure, superb beaches and exquisite food is a heavenly mix of Mediterranean colours with a glimmer of the past, an all-year-round destination.
The city’s seafront promenades lined with palm trees are reminiscent of … Miami, and its cosmopolitan character is accompanied by a deep sense of history.
Larnaka was the birthplace of the ancient philosopher, Zenon of Kition (Zeno of Citium). The name of the city itself is not just random: Larnaka means ‘’ sarcophagus’’ after the many tombs that were unearthed here in ancient times where the town of Kition once proudly stood.
One of them is probably that of Lazarus, Jesus’ friend, who shortly after his resurrection (according to the well-known miracle of the New Testament) arrived in Kition, where he then served as archbishop until his second death.
Fly with Olympic Air to the third largest city of Cyprus, located on the south-eastern end of the island.

Sightseeing in Larnaka
Admire the city’s imposing fort, which has stood on the edge of Larnaka, south of Foinikoudes beach, since the 14th century.
Visit also the Archaeological Museum, which guides you through the centuries-old tradition of the city, from prehistoric times to the Byzantine era (Address: Kalograion Square). Equally important is the collection at the Pierides Archaeological Museum, the life’s work of the Cypriot philanthropist and collector Dimitris Pierides and home to artefacts from the Neolithic era to the Middle Ages. (Address: 4 Zinonos Kitieos Street).
Visit the church of Saint Lazarus, built in the 9th century. According to the Christian tradition, Lazarus, after being resurrected by Jesus, served as archbishop in Larnaka for 30 years.
You will also be impressed by the Neolithic settlement of Hoirokoitia, at the foot of the Troodos mountains, with its circular houses.
It is certainly worth visiting Angeloktisti church in Kiti village, which is so beautiful that according to legend it was built by angels, hence its name. Admire the superb 6th century mosaic depicting the Virgin and Child, flanked by the Archangels.
When night falls, go and admire the illuminated Kamares (arches), part of the city’s ancient aqueduct.

Things to do in Larnaka
Take a trip to Lefkara village, and you will be impressed not only by how picturesque it is, with its stone houses and flower-filled courtyards, but also by its famous Lefkaritika embroidered goods, featuring designs embroidered with dark thread on linen material, a technique the village women took from the Venetians and which they still use today.
It is also worth going to see the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque and the adjacent Salt Lake (Alyki) wetlands, home in winter to thousands of flamingos!
Don’t wait to discover Agia Napa, which is one of the most cosmopolitan resorts of the entire Mediterranean and just 40 kilometres from Larnaka!
If you have children, you really should visit the Camel Park in Mazotos village, where young and old alike can see, in addition to camels, little donkeys, ponies, horses, deer, ostriches and kangaroos up close, and even feed them!
You will definitely want to go shopping! Larnaka’s hotspots, featuring most of the Cypriot and international designer shops, and the most popular chain stores, are on: Ermou street, Zinonos Kitieos street, Grigori Afxentiou Avenue and Makariou Avenue, and Pieridi Square. Also, every Sunday, Ermou street turns into an interesting outdoor market with all kinds of things.

Beaches
Foinikoudes and MacKenzie beaches are ideal for swimming and long strolls. While walking on the latter, marvel at the stunning sight of the aeroplanes coming in to land on the runway.
Kastella, Dhekelia, Alaminos Faros and Mazotos beach, complete the list of the island’s most beautiful beaches. Actually Mackenzie hides even more surprises for the braver ones among you who can go underwater with diving equipment to admire one of the ten most important shipwrecks in the world, that of the Swedish ferry ‘’Zenobia’’, which on its maiden voyage in 1980 capsized off the Cypriot coast where it remains to this day, at a depth of 18-42 metres.
In Larnaka, apart from diving, you can enjoy to the full, all kinds of other water sports from water skiing, jet skiing and surfing to kayaking and kitesurfing.
Food and Entertainment
Feel free to enjoy the delights of Cypriot cuisine in the island’s tavernas: grilled halloumi cheese, mini Anari cheese pies, Cypriot koupes (cracked wheat and meat pies), seftalia (skinless Cypriot sausage), and more. Accompany them with local Cypriot wine.
Larnaka certainly lives up to its reputation for frenzied nightlife. Its bars and nightclubs offer non-stop fun and drinks until dawn.
