To Ljubljana

Plan your trip to Ljubljana

Known as the “lady of the Balkans” and the “green diamond of the Adriatic”, in just a short while Ljubljana will “win” over even the most demanding visitor with its charm. It has been described as a “mini Austria” and a “pocket-size Prague”. The truth is that it resembles both, with the advantage that Ljubljana will transport you with the same magic, yet you will not have to put your hand so deeply into your pocket.

The Old Town will enchant you with its baroque, neoclassical and art nouveau buildings, the three beautiful, parallel stone bridges that crown the Ljubljanica River will captivate you as soon as find yourselves in the Mestni Square. Here you will see the Cathedral of St Nicholas, which can easily be distinguished thanks to its green dome and twin steeples. At the edge of the square, stands the impressive Robba Fountain, inspired by the fountains of Venice.

Ljubljana owes its art nouveau style and a large part of its charm to the Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik. Plečnik is for Ljubljana what Gaudí is for Barcelona.

Book your tickets for Ljubljana with Olympic Air and discover from up close the “green princess”, which is washed by the River Ljubljanica.

Sightseeing in Ljubljana

Take a stop in Prešeren Square to admire the statute of the national poet of Slovenia, France Prešeren, and the pink Franciscan church of the Annunciation.

From the medieval castle of the town, which ends at the triple bridge, Tromostovje, beneath which the waters of the River Ljubljanica flow, you will have the best view of the city. If the weather is good, visibility reaches as far as the Slovenian Alps!

Take the cable car – if the walk is too much for you – to go up to the observation tower and admire from up high the red roofs, turquoise domes and meandering bridges. The town centre is also connected to the castle with the tourist train, which departs every hour from Stritarjeva Street.

The corners of the famous Dragon Bridge are decorated with the sculptures of four dragons that resemble sleeping “guards” on the stone structure. Legend has it that the dragons move their tails whenever a virgin passes in front of them. It’s no coincidence that the dragon is the main symbol of the city.

Things to do Ljubljana

Art lovers and not only should visit the National Gallery (Address: Prešernova cesta 24, 1000 Ljubljana, www.ng-slo.si), which is the country’s most important art museum. Young and old will enjoy a trip to the House of Illusions. Its rooms are filled with jokes and wonderful optical illusions, which will definitely surprise you but also entertain you. “If a picture is worth a thousand words, be sure that an illusion hides more than a million!”, promises the gallery on its website. And it’s true. Just one visit will convince you! Address: Kongresni trg 13, http://muzejiluzij.si/en

If you would like to know more about the philosophy and work of Jože Plečnik – the architect to whom Ljubljana owes its charm – then add a visit to the city’s Museum of Architecture and Design to your itinerary.
Address: Grad Fužine Rusjanov trg 7, http://www.mao.si

It is worth visiting Tivoli City Park, which is just ten minutes from the centre. It opened in 1813 and is the largest and most beautiful park in the city, full of towering trees, little ponds, colourful flowers, statues and a zoo. There are moments in Tivoli City Park when you actually feel as though you are in a forest.

If you don’thave a fear of heights, then you must go to the top of the 70-metre-high Nebotičnik skyscraper. On its top floors are an observation deck, a café and a bar, with views over the whole city.

Excursions near Ljubljana

Slovenia is a great base for brief excursions to neighbouring countries. Trieste, Venice, Zagreb and Lake Balaton in Hungary are just a short trip away.

Within Slovenia, it is worth visiting Bled, the most characteristic image of which is its fairy-tale lake, surrounded by mountains, in the middle of which there proudly stands – on an islet – a little church with a belfry 55 metres high!

Shopping and Entertainment in Ljubljana

The pedestrian streets around the river are full of pretty bars and restaurants, where aside from the local specialties, with their strong Slavic, Mediterranean and even German influences, it is worth trying a Slovenian beer. What many people don’tknow about Slovenia is that it produces very good wine, thanks to the exceptional vineyards in its provinces.

Before leaving the city, you must try the dessert of Ljubljana: the so-called “kiss of Ljubljana”, a chocolate cake that is very reminiscent of the Viennese sacher torte.

In the city’s central, open-air market you can sample and buy the local cheeses, spices, Slovenian prosciutto (pršut) and great souvenirs.

Getting to Ljubljana

The arrivals lounge of Ljubljana airport has three things: a café, a tourist information office where you can find maps and tourist information, and several car rental agencies.

A rented car, bus or taxi are thus the three choices to reach the city centre available to the traveller who lands at Ljubljana Airport.

The bus departs from the airport once an hour and takes approximately 45-50 minutes to take you to the city centre. The ticket costs around 4 euros.

At Ljubljana Airport you will also find a shuttle bus that can take you to the city a little quicker, but for double the fare compared to the bus.

If you choose to go by taxi, then the cost for the journey from the airport to the city centre is around 35 euros.

Book your tickets for Ljubljana and land in the “elegant and aristocratic lady” of the Balkans, which looks as though it has sprung out from a romantic novel!
