Sightseeing in London

First on your list should be one of the most important museums in the world, the British Museum, which highlights the history of the world’s peoples and civilisation, housing 7,000,000 exhibits from the entire planet, including the famous ‘Parthenon marbles’’.

The imposing Tower of London stands majestically on the banks of the River Thames. Since it was first built in 1078 as a royal residence it has had a long and chequered history, as a long line of English monarchs have lived, and even executed their opponents there. Today it is the best-maintained fortress in London. Aside from its impenetrable walls and interior gardens, it is also a showcase for the dazzling Crown Jewels.

Perhaps London’s most famous landmark is Big Ben, located on the banks of the Thames, near Tower Bridge. Big Ben is the nickname for the great bell and clock at the north end of the palace of Westminster in London. Construction of the clock tower, which is the third tallest in the world, was completed on 10 April 1858.

Buckingham Palace, the official residence of Britain’s royal family, was built in 1703. It has hundreds of rooms and is decorated with famous works of art. It has been open to the public since 1993 and is worth visiting on Sunday mornings to see the changing of the guard. Why not combine it with a walk-in scenic Saint James’s Park, which is right beside it.

Enjoy the panoramic view from the modern symbol of London, the London Eye, a giant Ferris wheel erected on the banks of the River Thames. Book a ticket early to get on.

See also the iconic Saint Paul’s Cathedral, in the heart of the city, which is imprinted in pop culture from the song “Feed the birds” in the film, ‘’Mary Poppins’’, but also known around the world as where the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana took place. It is the only Baroque Church in England with a dome, one of the largest in the world. Make the effort to climb to the outer galleries of the dome to enjoy the magnificent view.

The Palace of Westminster is another of the city’s emblems, known also as the British Houses of Parliament. Housed in an impressive Victorian neo-Baroque 19th century palace, it is open to visitors on Saturdays and during the Christmas, Easter and summer holidays.
