To Podgorica
Travelling to Podgorica
Built at the confluence of the Morača and Ribnica rivers, the capital of Montenegro is a lively European metropolis with wonderful parks, interesting museums, a Mediterranean lifestyle and a vibrant nightlife.
Unpretentious and low key, the “town beneath the small mountain” (“pont-gorica” in Serbian) reveals a turbulent history of millennia and many different faces. From pre-Roman Doclea and Ottoman Ribnica to the Titograd of the former Yugoslavia and today’s Podgorica, Europe’s newest capital (Montenegro became an independent state only in 2006) is slowly but surely constructing its identity.
The Old Town (Stara Varoš) offers an atmospheric journey through the Ottoman past, while the heart of modern life and the country’s up-and-coming creative scene beats in the New Town (Nova Varoš).

Things to do in Podgorica
Stroll through the labyrinth of alleys in the Old Town (Stara Varoš) with its intense Eastern atmosphere and characteristic buildings, examples of Ottoman architecture. In the centre of the town stands one of its oldest symbols, the Clock Tower (18th century) as well as the impressive Osmanagic mosque from the same period.
Walk through the former medieval village – fortress Ribnica with the picturesque Adži-Paša’s bridge, one of the most historic sites in the city.

Built in 1891 as the winter palace of King Nikola I Petrović, it is located in the beautiful Kruševac forest park. Today it houses the impressive collection of the Contemporary Art Centre of Montenegro.
Also, worth a visit is the newly-built Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ (2014), the country’s largest Orthodox church, an imposing, luxurious architectural whole comprised of stone, ornate mosaics and wonderful frescoes.
