To Singapore

Travelling to Singapore

Ultramodern and exotic, the "Lion City" is a cosmopolitan metropolis with a unique identity; it is a model of multi-cultural harmony and ecological culture that enjoys economic prosperity.

A city of merchants and migrants, the one-time British port colony of the 19th century is now one of the biggest economic miracles in Asia and among the most contemporary cities in the world. In Singapore, the meeting of East and West creates an exciting kaleidoscope of diverse settings and images.

You will find modern boulevards and authentic tropical vegetation, contemporary skyscrapers and traditional wooden homes, Hindu temples and modern shopping centres, colourful ethnic districts and hi-tech artificial parks, clubbing and feng shui - all coexisting side by side.

Find the best deals on flights to Singapore on Olympic Air’s site and discover a colourful futuristic Eden in the heart of southeast Asia.

Things to do

Discover Singapore’s culturally-diverse heritage and bygone colonial glory by visiting its ethnic districts: colourful Chinatown with its Buddhist temples, the charismatic and bustling Little India, Kampong Glam with the historic Sultan Mosque and exotic Arab Street.

Learn more about the origins of modern Singapore in the Civic district with its magnificent neoclassical buildings of the Victorian era, such as the legendary Raffles Hotel and the Asian Civilisations Museum.

Walk through the Marina Bay area, right out of a science fiction film, around the calm waters of the Singapore River. Admire the skyscrapers of the dazzling Marina Bay Sands casino-resort, the futuristic Gardens by the Bay and the Art Science Museum.

Enjoy a romantic stroll in the outstanding Botanical Gardens (1859) in the heart of the city, a genuine tropical forest with more than 3,000 species of orchids from all over the world.

Visit the impressive National Museum of Singapore (1887) for a hi-tech presentation of Singapore’s transformation from a small agrarian island to a futuristic 21st century metropolis.

Make a stop at the Thian Hock Keng, one of the oldest (1842) and most important Hokkien temples in Singapore. It is a masterpiece of architecture made of stone, tiles and wood, with exquisite reliefs and sculptures.

Visit the fascinating Peranakan Museum, devoted to the unique civilisation, traditions and lavish lifestyle of the Peranakans, (natives of Singapore, descendants of Chinese and Malay immigrants). The museum houses 10 permanent collections.

Exploring Singapore

Spend a day on Sentosa Island, just 500 metres off the coast of Singapore. The one-time British military fort (1880) has now been converted into a gigantic theme park, known as an Asian Disneyland. Opt for taking the cable car connecting the city of Singapore to the island. The view from the aerial gondolas is breathtaking.

Visit the best zoo in Asia featuring more than 2,500 species of animals in an open, natural environment. Enjoy the unique experience of a nighttime safari in the special park of nocturnal wild animals including tigers, lions and huge… low-flying bats.

Adrenalin lovers shouldn’t miss the chance to go on the Singapore Flyer, the giant observation wheel that stands at a height of 165 metres above the beach on Raffles Avenue. Climb into one of the glass cabins and enjoy the unforgettable view of the Singaporean skyline.

Shopping in Singapore

The best time for shopping is the period of the Great Singapore Sale, lasting from May to July.

The Mecca of consumption is dazzling Orchard Road, with kilometres of multi-storey shopping centres featuring all the international luxury brands and more. The most famous are ION Orchard, 313@Somerset, and Tanglin Shopping Centre with cultural souvenirs and antiques.

Don’t miss exploring also the smaller boutiques and curio shops in Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam.

The open-air markets of Bugis Street, and Pagoda, Trengganu and Sago Streets in Chinatown are bustling with vendors selling every kind of souvenir, knick-knacks and imitation products imaginable.

Singapore is also a paradise for electronic goods. The greatest variety and best prices are to be found at Sim Lim Square, Funan DigitaLife Mall or Mustafa Centre.

For gourmet expeditions, visit the covered markets Tekka Wet Market and Chinatown Wet Market.

Food and Entertainment in Singapore

Singapore is known for its cuisine, a unique combination of Chinese, Malay, Indian and Western elements. The most prevalent cuisine of the area is Peranakan or Nonya.

The best way to enjoy the intoxicating variety of local dishes is at the renowned hawker centres (covered markets with myriad cooked-food stalls) or at one of the kopitiam diners (cafés which also serve food). The most popular hawker centres are Lau Pa Sat, Maxwell (in Chinatown) and East Coast Lagoon Food Village. Be sure to try some chilli crab, katong laksa, satay and chicken rice (Singapore's national dish).

For more formal meals, the larger hotels have elegant restaurants with culinary offerings and star chefs from all over the world.

For your night-time entertainment, head for the bars on the banks of the Singapore River (Clarke Quay, Boat Quay and Robertson Quay). Clubbing here is the best in Asia, with futuristic clubs and famous DJs from the world dance scene making frequent appearances.

For a unique experience, enjoy an authentic Singapore Sling at the legendary Long Bar of the Raffles Hotel where the famous cocktail was concocted in 1915.
