To Stockholm
Plan your journey for Stockholm
A city that you imagine comes straight out of a fairy tale. The cosmopolitan capital of the North is comprised of 14 different islands that are connected by 57 bridges and which compete with each other as to which has the most harmonious architecture. Don’t forget that you are in the homeland of Scandinavian design!
Wonderful both when covered in snow or bathed in the summer sun, Stockholm is a capital for all seasons. The only thing to bear in mind is that in the winter there are only 6 hours of daylight!
If you go to Stockholm and you don’t see the old town, where life in the city began in the 13th century, then you will have to return to visit it. The historic centre of Stockholm, an emblem of the city, is one of the best-preserved medieval settlements in Europe. With cobbled lanes that resemble a labyrinth, it is spread out over three islets: Stads, Riddar and Helgents. Even just entering the old town, through a large triple gate, is impressive as it is reminiscent of a medieval castle.
Pass through the gates for a journey through history, gastronomy, art and culture.

Sightseeing in Stockholm
On the road for the historic centre pause to take a look at the Riddarholmen church, in which most Swedish kings have been buried. Inside the old town, the ultramodern Nobel Prize Museum is definitely worth visiting. Housed in a wonderful 18th-century building, it brings to life the history of the famous prize that has been awarded by the Swedish Academy since 1901 until today.

In the Royal Palace of Stockholm, open to visitors all-year round, you can take a peek inside the everyday lives of the Swedish monarchs. Plan your visit so that it coincides with the changing of the guard, which takes place everyday outside the palace – it’s an impressive spectacle!

The Modern Art Museum of Stockholm is one of the most famous in the world, as its collections include works by world-class artists, such as Picasso, Matisse, Warhol, Dalí, de Chirico and Miro. As you leave, look for (and admire) its open-air sculpture gallery.

At ABBA The Museum you will learn literally everything there is to know about the Swedish pop band that had its heyday in the 70s and 80s. Next to the museum is the historic Gröna Lund amusement park, literally on the sea, where young and old can have fun!
Things to do in Stockholm
Wander through the cobbled lanes with the tourist shops, restaurants and cafes of the historic centre and honour the Swedish tradition by having a “fika”, a break for a coffee accompanied by fragrant, fresh desserts. One occasion is not enough. Don’t make the mistake of wearing high heels for your walk in the old town – you won’t get very far!
The best way to see Stockholm (aside from on foot) is by bicycle. Taxis are – unfortunately – very expensive. Don’t get lost if you have the opportunity to take the metro. Some 150 artists have helped to adorn over 90 underground stations in Stockholm with paintings, sculptures and mosaics. The result will amaze you!
Another great thing to do is to take a boat trip in the canals: you will have the best view of the city this way, especially at sunset, when everything is bathed in an orange-violet colour and the view is stunning!
You will definitely see it from afar if you take a walk through the old town, and it will attract your attention so much that you will want to take a photograph of it. If you have the time, however, it is definitely worth visiting. This is the famous ship the Vasa, the only 17th-century ship that still survives up until our days. In fact, 95% of its original parts are still preserved today and it is decorated with hundreds of carved sculptures. The Vasa ship is a wonderful artistic jewel and one of the world’s most important historical sights. It is no surprise that today it attracts more visitors than any other museum in the whole of Scandinavia. The Vasa is a large warship that was built in Stockholm. According to the legend, it was on the 10th of August 1628 when the Vasa was preparing for its maiden voyage. As the ship was slowly advancing towards the entrance of the port, a strong wind suddenly blew. The Vasa tipped but managed to set itself upright and find its route once again. A second gust of wind, however, knocked the ship over and it eventually sank, with only 30 of its 150-member crew surviving. A total of 333 years were to pass until the ship saw the sky above Stockholm again.

Excursions near Stockholm
Take a tour in one of the boats that depart from the Strömkajen pier in Stockholm and set sail for the Swedish archipelago and its 30,000 little islands.
The ferry will take you to picturesque little villages just a stone’s throw from the city centre. Most visitors simply go for a day trip, but it is recommended that you don’t go straight back. Stay in one of their charming hostels and spend a few days having a sauna, going kayaking and taking romantic walks in nature. The best way to recharge your batteries!

Shopping and Entertainment in Stockholm
For strolling and shopping, go to Drottninggatan, the central paved street in Stockholm. The great writer August Strindberg spent the last years of his life in number 85 on this street, where today there is a museum dedicated to him (https://www.strindbergsmuseet.se).
The main hotspot in Stockholm is the Ice Bar, the world’s first bar on ice. Here you can enjoy your drink or cocktail at a temperature of 5 degrees Celsius. Try your luck at the art of ice sculpture! The Ice Bar is located in the Nordic Sea Hotel and is “built” exclusively with water from the River Torne in Lapland. It can only host up to 30 people at any one time and whoever cannot tolerate the cold is not permitted to be in there for over 45 minutes. An experience you must not miss!
Getting to Stockholm
After your arrival at Stockholm Airport, and a little after you have claimed your baggage and are heading for the exit, your attention will be drawn to a bright-red sofa in the shape of a kiss, which invites you to sit on it and have your photograph taken!
To get to the city, you can either hire a car or take public transport (train, bus, taxi). The Arlanda Express train is the fastest way.
If you are taking a taxi, it is advisable to agree the fare before even getting into the vehicle, in order to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
