Flying is considered to be the best way to travel as it combines speed, comfort and security. There are however special circumstances related to flying that may cause some minor feelings of discomfort, especially during long flights.

The following tips will allow you to enjoy your flight and reach your destination feeling relaxed, refreshed and safe.


Changes in the cabin’s air pressure can cause discomfort to your ears, especially during landing. Therefore, if you feel discomfort in your ears you may try swallowing repeatedly, chewing gum or pretending to yawn. You can also try pinching your nose closed (while keeping your mouth closed as well) and blowing air as if you were exhaling through your nose.

All the above contribute towards unblocking your Eustachian tubes and equalizing the air pressure within the ear with the air pressure outside. If you have a cold, it would be advisable to use a nasal spray 20 minutes before landing.

If you are escorting young children, you can give them something to eat during landing, so that they can chew and swallow repeatedly, thus facilitating air pressure equalization.


Humidity is usually low inside the aircraft cabin. This may cause a sense of dryness in your eyes, nose and throat. In order to prevent such symptoms during the flight, you can:

  • Drink plenty of water and juice
  • Use hydrating creams/lotions to moisturize your skin
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses
  • Avoid drinking alcohol or caffeinated beverages


Dizziness - nausea

You may feel discomfort due to dizziness caused by movement when there is no simultaneous view of the horizon or steady point of reference. Dizziness mainly occurs due to discordance between your visual stimuli and your body’s sense of balance; its main symptoms are vertigo, nausea and exhaustion.
If you often feel dizzy and nauseous when travelling, then you should take certain precautionary measures so as to make your trip more pleasant:

  • Have a light meal before and during the flight – your stomach should be neither full, nor empty.
  • Request a window seat, preferably over the wing.
  • Look outside the window to the horizon, or at a steady visual reference point.
  • Use medication recommended for this condition by your doctor, or any non-prescription aides such as special chewing gum.

Fear of flying

Although airplanes are considered to be the safest means of transport, you may be afraid of flying and feel distressed during a flight.

Fear of flying may be a distinct phobia in itself, or it may be an indirect combination of one or more other phobias related to flying, such as claustrophobia (a fear of enclosed spaces) or acrophobia (a fear of heights). In any case, the most usual symptoms are sweating, quick heart rate, short breath, feeling of nausea, loss of appetite.

The following tips can help you deal with your fear:

  • Arrive at the airport early, in order to become accustomed to the circumstances and the atmosphere.
  • During the flight, try to be calm and breathe normally.
  • Keep your mind busy by listening to music or reading.
  • If you begin to have symptoms, breathe deeply and slowly, inhaling through your nose. Hold your breath for a while, and exhale slowly. Repeat these steps, until you feel better.
  • Do not hesitate to ask for the cabin crew’s assistance. At any time you deem necessary, take any natural or pharmaceutical product with a calming effect, following your doctor’s recommendation or prescription. 


Smoking is not permitted on our flights. You can reduce the feeling of nicotine withdrawal by using special patches or chewing special gum.
