Chania’s cultural agenda will keep you occupied all year round. Theatrical and musical performances, exhibitions, concerts and other events abound during the annual Summer Festival, summoning the visitor at the Eastern Moat Theatre, the Kipos, the Venizeleio Conservatory and the city park. In early summer the city hosts the Venizeleia track and field games, while Chania’s Agriculture Week in August will allow you to sample, once again, the irresistible delicacies.


RELIGIOUS FESTIVALS

Panigyria, Greek religious festivals to the accompaniment of traditional instruments and dances, can be experienced in Agios Ioannis in Sfakia (May 8th), Agios Georgios in Asi Gonia (April 23rd), Evaggelismos in Palaiohora (March 25th), Agios Antonios in Sougia (Jyly 1-2nd), Hrysoskalitsa (August 15th) and Agios Nikitas in Fragkokstelo (September 15th), featuring traditional horse races.


WINE ROADS

Cretan wineries, among Greece’s finest, produce “romeiko”, “marouvas”, as well as Cabernet, Merlot, and other varieties. The region’s best congregate in Voukoulies, Kolympari, Kissamos, Akrotiri and Kryonerida, near the airport. Vineyard owners will gladly offer their local produce, to accompany your wine tasting.

VEREKINTHOS ARTIST'S VILLAGE

This inventive artists’ commune has taken root on Chania’s Eastern approach. Within its walls, ceramics, sculpture, painting, hagiography and traditional arts are given free rein. Visit the grounds, and watch artisans at work.
