A silent stone city, Anavatos appears to emerge out of the earth. Known as “Aegean Mystra”, the deserted village is located in island’s centre and is built on a tall forbidding rock. Taking advantage of their village’s naturally fortified position, the inhabitants surrounded their 400 homes with a circular wall. This impressive settlement was abandoned after the Massacre of 1822. An important number of homes –and the villages impressive olive press- still stand intact.
