The island has been known for its culinary prowess since Antiquity. Blessed with a great variety of local products, Chios is deservedly proud of its culinary traditions. Apart from fresh seafood –for which the island is also famous- try avgokalamara (mince meat filled omelettes), atherina pies, volous Pyrgousikous (a local version of the popular Greco-Turkish dish of Yuvarlakia) and fried vegetable patties.
Chios’ ouzo or Ariouso local wine are fine accompaniments to local cuisine. Sample aromatic sweets and preserves as well as turkish delight, walnut pie and every imaginable variation of mastic sweets.


Nightlife on the island unfolds in a characteristic quiet pace and is concentrated in the center and Chios town’s waterfront. There you will find dozens of small cafes and bars and you can enjoy your coffee with beautiful harbour views.
