Cretan cuisine is balanced and healthy. At the fishtaverns of Heraklion you will find fresh fish and many other plates. Try the delicious Cretan “staka”, which is lightly salted heavy cream, boiled in low fire with a pinch of flour. Don’t miss pitta from Sfakia (fried with sour cheese, topped with honey), stuffed lamb, lamb in herbs and fried dumplings “xerotigana”.
As a large university town, Heraklion offers endless nightlife options in its city centre (Daedalus str., Korai str. and Perdikari str.), near the port (Theotokopoulou and Beaufort streets) and in the internationally renowned district of Hesronissos. The area behind the Lion Fountain runs at lower decibels, together with Eleftherias Square with its pastry shops and traditional cafes.
