Karpathos’ most famous dish is the traditional Easter “fto” or “byzanti” (goat stuffed with rice and chopped liver, baked in the oven). Try makarounes (handmade pasta) with “siknosi” (chopped and sautéed onion) or sitaka with sardines. If you find yourself in a bakery on Saturday, get a uniquely tasting “lahanopiti” (cabbage pie). Finally, scour the tavernas for stuffed vine leaves and stuffed courgette blossoms. Seafood, fresh fish, lobster and seafood snacks are served in many tavernas, while the local shrimp is the locals favourite snack. Don’t miss the outstanding syrup desserts on offer.

Night time activity in Karpathos tends to congregate in the island’s capital of Pigadia. For a relaxing coffee, one of the many cafes on the harbour waterfront is what you’ve been looking for. For a traditional village cafe atmosphere, try the establishments of Olympos, the Dramountana in Mesohori or the Koubaniou in Spoa.
