Before leaving, pack the tastes and smells of Kefalonia in your luggage, buying local thyme honey, robola wine –“stone wine” as the Venetians called it– moustokouloura cookies, mandarin liqueur and soumada. Do not resist local sweet delights such as pastokydono and mandoles. Traditional products, souvenirs and folk art can be bought in the shopping street of Lithostroto in Argostoli, in Fiskardo and in Sami and Poros. Look for handmade embroidery, woven from cactus fibre.


Boat excursions are possible from most of the island’s ports. Reach inaccessible beaches from Fiskardo and Sami or take a day trip to Ithaca, Lefkada and Skorpios, the Onassis family private island, recently acquired by a new owner.
