Your visit in Naxos cannot be considered complete without purchasing some of its outstanding local products. Arseniko cheese, slowly matured, is one of this fertile island’s prized products. Do not miss the mizithra cheese, as well as anthotiro, xinogalo and the tasty local gruyere cheese. Seek out the “askoudes”, the island’s best olives and locally distilled raki. In Chalki village, buy the local syrupy sweets and fruit preserves. At the Women’s Cooperative of Apeiranthos you may marvel at and purchase hand made embroideries, known as “krevataria” in local dialect. This ancient art is passed on through the generations. Apart from their obvious beauty and rare craftsmanship, Apeiranthos’ embroideries are known for their functionality.


A WALK TO APEIRANTHOS

This breath taking mountain village, located 32 km from the capital, nestles between two green valleys, at an altitude of 650 metres. The inhabitants’ unique accent is reminiscent of the Cretan idiom. The village is mentioned for the first time in 1420 by an enchanted Italian traveller. Four museums operate in the village: Archaeological, hosting pre Cycladic exhibits, Folk Art museum with a replica of a local house in the 19th century and a Natural History museum, exhibiting flora and a small aquarium.
