IERAPETRA

The town prides itself on being Europe’s southernmost settlement. 60 km from Sitia and with a population of over 12,000, Ierapetra is the only town on Crete’s South shore. It is located 36 km from Aghios Nikolaos and surrounded by fertile land and golden beaches. In Ierapetra, wander the narrow streets of Kato Mera, the old quarter of the city, and visit the Venetian fortress of Kale, built in the early 13th century and surviving today in excellent condition. The promenade along the sea front is a lively one, with many cafés, restaurants and bars.


EXCURSION TO ZACROS

Zacros, 36 km from Sitia, is a verdant picturesque village of 800 inhabitants, with a renowned spring and its very own Water museum. The Nekron gorge path begins from the village, to end up in Kato Zacros, next to the Minoan palace ruins.

Sitia’ market is ideal for all kinds of shopping and souvenir buying. What makes it unique, however, is the great quantity of local products, like olive oil, wine, raki, delicious honey and herbs, all certified by the Union of Agricultural Cooperatives of Sitia. Look for “Sitia”, oil, Cretan local wines and “Varvaki” Sitia raki.
