The period of Venetian occupation has left a legacy of important monuments, some of which are excellently preserved. One of them is the fort of 1579, located on the islet of Spinalonga across the bay from Elounda. The impressive castle now welcomes many visitors, casting a spell on the infamous recent past of the first half of the 20th century when the local leper colony. You can reach it by boat from Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and Plaka.


With Sitia as a starting point you can go on trips that will reveal the full glory of the Cretan land: exotic beaches, canyons with lush vegetation, picturesque villages and dispersed cosmopolitan centres. Wherever you go you will feel the authentic Cretan hospitality offered by the welcoming people Lassithi people! Kato Zakros Gorge (Gorge of Death) is surrounded by cliffs and caves. The Minoans used to bury their dead here in small crevasses high up in the walls of the gorge. It is part of the E4 walking trail and you can easily walk through it in about an hour.
Three to four hours of walking are enough to reveal an idyllic landscape with wild vegetation and rare species of fauna (rams, eagles, hawks). In Diktaion Antron (the cave where according to mythology, Zeus was born), on Mount Dikti, witness impressive stalactites and stalagmites accessed via a paved path.
