Offering on the one hand some of the world’s most exclusive and luxurious resorts, and on the other, spots of pristine natural beauty, ancient cities and medieval villages, verdant gorges, mountains and beaches of absolute tranquillity. If you choose to reach it by plane, you will land at Sitia Airport, 67 km east of Agios Nikolaos, the county’s capital. Picturesque Sitia is a beautiful town, continuously inhabited since Minoan times, flourishing from classical times to the Ottoman era.
In Venetian times the town suffered numerous natural disasters, from earthquakes to pirate raids, and was abandoned for almost two centuries. The new town of Sitia was built in 1870, enjoying today a population of 10,000. Compared to other of Crete’s cosmopolitan destinations, Sitia has managed to maintain a steady and rational pace in its tourist development. Bordered by sandy beaches and many places of cultural interest, it is the ideal refuge for those seeking a quiet holiday, but also a perfect homebase for stunning hikes and excursions throughout eastern Crete.
