The smallest –only 48 square km– but the most cosmopolitan island of the Sporades island complex, to the East of Pelion, Skiathos is a “Garden of Eden” for thousands of Greek and foreign travellers. The island combines incredible natural beauty with lush vegetation reaching all the way to the crystal clear waters. Highly developed tourist infrastructure and a vibrant nightlife complement the idyllic scenery. The picturesque town of Skiathos, with its 5,000 residents, is the island’s only settlement, occupying the same geographical position since ancient times. Notwithstanding significant tourism development, Skiathos managed to keep its special character intact. Birth place of Greek writer Papadiamantis, the town with its white houses, many bell towers, flower filled alleys, and lively commercial hustle and bustle, is built amphitheatrically on the northeast side of the harbour and oscillates with unique dexterity between past and present.
Paved narrow streets, flower filled gardens and courtyards, Aegean architecture infused with marked Peliorite influences, loggias and tiled roofs, sites of significant historical importance and natural beauty, such as the Bourtzi Castle, the wetland of Strofylia, supplement the colourful puzzle of the island’s town and enhance its uniqueness.
