To Mytilene
Plan your trip to Mytilene
Lesvos, or Mytilene, as it is usually called, after the name of its capital, is an island worth going to more than once. One visit is never enough for you to discover all of its attractions and secrets. You will have to come back again to get more of a taste of everything that this unique destination is eager to offer.
The third largest island in Greece, Mytilene stimulates the senses, triggers emotions, captures the heart. In the homeland of the poetess Sappho and lyric poet Arion, the charm of the past resurfaces among the important archaeological sites, Byzantine, Medieval and Ottoman monuments, historical monasteries, old churches and neoclassical mansions.
All these sweetly mingle with the natural heritage of the island: its mountains, springs, pine forests, chestnut groves, olive groves and unexplored caves.
Fly to Mytilene on the wings of Olympic Air and start exploring now!

Sightseeing in Mytilene
Stroll through Mytilene town and admire the well-maintained neoclassical houses, testifying to the island’s past commercial relations with the whole of Europe. Climb up to the Byzantine castle, built by Emperor Justinian and visit the town’s many museums: the Old and New Archaeological Museum, the Theophilos Museum, in Vareia, as well as the Eleftheriadis (Tériade) Modern Art Museum - library. Admire the original works of art signed by each of the artists with whom the famous art critic Stratis Eleftheriadis worked. Make a stop also at the Municipal Art Gallery to see works by Tsarouchis, Picasso, Moralis, Fassianos, etc.
Visit the ancient theatre, located on the hill of Mytilene town, which was built in the Hellenistic period and remodelled by the Romans. Its excellent acoustics rival those of the theatre at Epidavros.
Don’t miss the Petrified Forest Park in Sigri, one of the most beautiful monuments of global geological heritage. It extends over the north-western part of Lesvos, in a region covered almost entirely by volcanic stone (https://www.petrifiedforest.gr).
Leaving Mytilene town, on the way to Molyvos, you will be amazed by the abandoned factories conjuring up images of a European country during the period of the Industrial Revolution.
Molyvos, in the north part of the island, with its stone mansions and cobbled alleys, is recognised as one of the most beautiful villages in Greece. Visit the castle, the second largest and most important fortress on the island, and admire the most beautiful sunset. Built during the Byzantine period with reddish brown trachyte, the castle has been restored and today is considered one of the best-maintained fortresses in the Eastern Mediterranean. In summer it hosts many cultural events.
Don’t miss visiting Taxiarchis (Archangel Michael) Monastery in Mantamados. It is the most famous monastery of the island and located north of Lesvos, about 36 km from the town of Mytilene. According to the legend, Saracens pirates invaded the Monastery and massacred all the monks except for one, who had hidden out on the roof of the church. Suddenly, the scared monk saw the shape of Archangel Michael raising his glaive against the Saracens who scuttled away. Thanks to the miracle, the monk survived and wanted to show his respect to Taxiarchis. He took soil, mixed it with the blood of his dead fellows and he made the sculpture of Taxiarchis.
Climb up to the Panagia Petra, a church literally perched on the top of a giant rock. It is worth climbing the 114 steps, carved into the rock, to get to the church for the amazing view which stretches unobstructed as far as the beach of Asia Minor.
Plan a session at the island’s therapeutic spas for a unique, mystical experience that will totally revitalise you after your strolls through the cobbled streets.
A trip to Plomari, hometown to the No. 1 product of the island - ouzo - is an absolute must. Here you can visit the only Ouzo museum in Greece and discover the secrets of the famous aniseed-based drink. You can also get an insider‘s look into how soap is made at the small exhibition housed in Plomari’s old soap factory. Another impressive highlight of the village is the small river that appears to cut Plomari in two.

Beaches
Lesvos has many beaches to suit every taste and need, from sandy, pebbly, rocky or rich in vegetation. Some of the most beautiful beaches of the island are: Eressos (birthplace of Sapho), Vatera, Agios Ergomenis, Tsamakia, Molyvos, Tarti, Sigri, Kanoni, Petali, Skala Mystegnon, Skala Polichnitou, Skala Eressos, Pedi, Eftalou and Petra.

Food and Entertainment
The island is famous for its ouzo, olive oil and cheese, honey and its seafood, (Kalloni’s salt-cured sardines are famous worldwide). Climb up to the Lighthouse to enjoy them in the area of Mytilene’s ouzeries. Apart from delighting your palate, this area is also ideal for relaxing. Admire the endless view to the illuminated bay that stretches out below you.
Enjoy a Greek coffee on embers in the island’s traditional cafés, accompanied by a tasty syrupy fruit spoon sweet. If you are hungry, a little glass of ouzo with local meze will do the trick!
Transport from Mytilene airport
As soon as you land on Mytilene, if you have not arranged for a transfer to your destination, you can take a taxi or the local bus, which runs frequently from the airport to the main parts of the island. Since the island is large and distances are great you might prefer to hire a car from one of the car rental agencies at the airport.
