To Bahrain

Plan your trip to Bahrain

The cradle of one of the oldest civilizations in the world, Bahrain is an archipelago of 33 islands off the west coast of the Persian Gulf, between Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and was a historic centre for trade from 3,000 BC.

Its amazing beaches and beautiful landscapes have made Bahrain (which means “two seas” in Arabic) a tourism destination known the world over. It is these same features that have justified the name “Hawaii of the Middle East” that Bahrain has been given.

Even though it is in the Persian Gulf, Bahrain is oriented towards the West and is a first-class destination for American and European tourists, as well as for Middle Eastern visitors who want to relax, have a drink and some fun.

Here, yesterday and today meet in a unique way, as you can see in the hypermodern skyscrapers rising next to traditional Middle Eastern minarets.

Book your ticket with Olympic Air and discover a wonderful jewel in the Persian Gulf, the Pearl of the East!

Sightseeing in Bahrain

The World Trade Centre is the Arabic answer to the old Twin Towers of New York. This impressive 240-metre tall building is the first skyscraper in the world to have wind turbines integrated into it.

The National Museum of Bahrain, which through its rich collection transports the visitor on a journey through history that goes back 5,000 years. Among the exhibits is a tumulus that was transported from the desert and reassembled here. A new gallery opened in 1993, dedicated to the wealth of the flora and fauna of the region. Address: Al Fatih Hwy.

The Qal’at al Bahrain a 16th-century Portuguese fortress that has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites List. The traces of human presence in this region go back as far as 2300 BC until today. The evidence suggests that this spot is where the ancient capital of the Dilmun kingdom was located. Address: Karbabad.

The Beit al-Quran Museum offers a panoramic view of anything related to the Holy Book of the Muslims, the Koran. Its huge collection includes holy books of every type and age (the oldest being 7th century). Inside the museum you will see something truly remarkable: verses of the Koran carved into rice grains! Address: Building No.17, Road No.1901.

The Bahrain Formula 1 track, where the Grand Prix race of the same name takes place every April. This spectacular circuit cost more than 150 million dollars to create, and the annual race is considered one of the kingdom's top sporting events.

Things to do in Bahrain

Visit Muharraq, the former capital of the ancient Dilmun people. Get lost in the narrow lanes of the atmospheric old town and take photographs of the traditional houses, splendid examples of Islamic architecture that look as though they have come straight out of an Arabian fairy tale.

Go pearl hunting. In Bahrain there are many agencies that organise excursions that include pearl diving and snorkelling.

Entertainment in Bahrain

When night falls, Bahrain comes to life in its exciting clubs and bars. The capital of Bahrain, Manama, and specifically the neighbourhood of Adliya are where the heart of the city’s nightlife beats, with hot spots for American and European tourists as well as Middle Easterners.

In the pubs you can enjoy a game of billiards or darts as you enjoy your beer, while on the TV screens along the walls you can catch up with the latest developments in international sports.

Many clubs have live music, with an Arabic, Indian, Ethiopian and Filipino vibe, while you can always find some karaoke and a place to dance. The alcohol flows freely as there are no prohibitions on its consumption in Bahrain.

Shopping

Don’t leave Bahrain without having bought some pearls. The pearl trade dominated in Bahrain long before the country’s rich oil deposits were discovered. It is no coincidence, then, that this pearl is also the symbol of the kingdom.

In order to sustain this heritage, the sale of cultured pearls is forbidden, so if you buy pearls in Bahrain then you know they are natural. The best place to buy pearls is the Gold City Mall.

If you would like to make purchases from well-known brands or at least go window shopping in the big designer stores, then go to Moda Mall and Al Aali Mall.

For great bargains on clothes and shoes, electronics and games, go to the Bargain For Less Bahrain department store, and also to Dragon City Mall, where you can find everything from furniture to electronic devices made in China. In the mall are restaurants serving the most delicious, authentic Chinese food you will have eaten in your life.

Finally, a visit to the famous Bab Al Bahrain souk, the open-air market where you can buy carpets, spices, fruits, clothes, jewellery (gold and pearl) and all kinds of souvenirs is a must.

Useful tip: Don’t buy anything without having haggled your price!

Getting from the airport to Bahrain

The bus is the best way to get from Bahrain International Airport to the centre of the capital – just 7 kilometres divide the two. You can purchase a ticket on the bus although if you buy it from the automatic ticket machines in the arrivals lounge then the cost will be 20% cheaper.

Alternatively, you can take a taxi or hire a car from one of the 15 car rental agencies inside the airport. Many hotels in Manama have their own minibuses to transfer their guests to and from the airport.
