To Gothenburg

Plan your trip to Gothenburg

In Sweden’s largest city of Gothenburg (it means “gothic castle”) anxiety is an unknown word. Everything moves at a relaxed pace in this picturesque city, through which the River Göta runs and which has plenty of greenery, beautiful parks and cobbled roads.

Sweden’s second city has far more beautiful sights than the capital does, but few know of them.

Located along the country’s coast, the port of Gothenburg is the ideal base for island-hopping around the Archipelago of the North Sea.

Environmentally friendly from all aspects, Gothenburg uses electric buses with zero carbon emissions. The Styr & Ställ (public bike-sharing program) rental bicycles are also user-friendly and the first 30 minutes are free.

Hop on one of these bikes and wander through the verdant roads till you reach the stunning Älvsborg bridge, which connects the north and south parts of the city.

What you will not be able to resist here (aside from the fish and seafood) are the city’s blue retro trams, which look as though they have just jumped out from a past decade. Don’t just photograph them – hop on board and take a relaxed trip around the city.

Book your tickets for Gothenburg and discover one of Sweden’s most beautiful cities.

Sightseeing in Gothenburg

Visit the crown sconce (Skansen Kronan). This impressive fortress was completed in 1600 and has 23 cannons ready to defend the city -although these have never been used since Gothenburg has never been under attack! The building was later used as a jail while today it houses the city’s military museum. The view of the city from this point high up is magical. In the café of the fortress you can enjoy some homemade ice cream as well as other delicious desserts.

Take a stroll through Gothenburg Botanical Garden, one of the largest in Europe. In this paradise that attracts over half a million visitors each year, you can admire over 16,000 species of plants and flowers. You will want to while away several hours in the garden as there are spots where you can sit and relax. Download the Botaniska app to your phone to turn it into your personal guide! Entrance to the gardens is free although to enter the greenhouses you must buy a ticket for 20 krona (around 2 euros). The greenhouses contain the largest collection of orchids in Sweden and you will also be able to observe flesh-eating plants from up close, like those in the cartoons! Before you leave, take a stop in the garden shop to buy seeds for plants, books and gardening tools.

The area of Haga, a former working-class district, is today one of the city’s most picturesque and oldest neighbourhoods. With cobbled lanes and well-preserved buildings, it is perfect for endless strolls. Here, you will find the most charming cafes and restaurants as well as many antique shops. In the local cafes you will be able to have a “fika”, a coffee or tea break accompanied by fragrant, freshly baked desserts.

The Universeum science centre and the city’s University. The Universeum invites you to take a magical journey to the world of science and technology. Here, animals and nature are harmoniously involved in technology and experiments!
Address: Södra vägen 50, www.universeum.se

Amongst its many museums, Gothenburg also has a Radio Museum (Address: Anders Carlssons gata 2, www.radiomuseet.se/). Lovers of four wheels can also take a stop at the Swedish carmaker’s Volvo Museum.

Things to do in Gothenburg

If you love nature and animals, then take a trip to Slottsskogen park in the centre of town. At the edge of the park is the Gothenburg Natural History Museum, with exhibits of animals from all over the world.

If you have children you will not be able to escape a visit to the Liseberg amusement park, located right next to the science centre. Looking as though it has jumped straight out of a fairy tale, the Liseberg is one of the oldest amusement parks in the whole of Scandinavia. It is open to the public from April to October for the summer season and between November and December for Christmas. Its wooden roller coaster, which has been voted one of the best in the world, is famous!

Shopping

In addition to the quaint shops of Haga, Magasinsgatan Avenue, Avenyn and the neighbourhood of Linnéstaden are parts of the city that are identified with the meaning of shopping. The same is true of the large malls, such as Nordstan. There are also many shops around Järntorget square, an area that remains alive during the night as it is surrounded by theatres, and bars and restaurants where you can enjoy a relaxing drink or eat with friends.

Another place that you must visit is Kronhuset, behind the central Gustav Adolf Square, with its artists’ workshops and interesting shops selling mainly handmade goods.
