Known as the “Stone Forest” or “Stone Desert”, Pobiti Kamani is a rare geological phenomenon in the southwest hinterland of Varna, which stirs the visitor’s imagination. This protected natural monument consists of clusters of stone columns 5-7 metres high, which look as though they have grown out of the sand.
Coastal Balchik is one of the most picturesque towns in Bulgaria, with pretty traditional houses scrambling up hillsides that run down to meet the sea. The most famous sight here is Balchik Palace (the “Quiet Nest” Palace of Queen Marie of Romania in the interwar period) and its famous Royal Gardens.

Amble along Knyaz Boris, the main shopping street in the city, where the stores of all the largest international brands and boutique local designers are to be found.

The centre of Varna’s social life is the historic Independence Square (Ploshtad Nezavisimost). This is where the locals gather for their afternoon get togethers, around the “Singing Fountain” and the stunning Opera House. The favourite walk of the inhabitants of Varna begins at Independence Square, a pedestrianised route that goes along Slivnitsa Avenue and continues along the central Knyaz Boris, with its countless bars, to end at the pedestrianised road in the harbour, with the luxury marinas and cosmopolitan atmosphere.

Getting from the airport to Varna
Take bus 409, which connects the airport with the centre of Varna (Varna Cathedral). Buses depart every 15 minutes from the bus stop outside Terminal 2. The journey time for the city centre is 20 minutes while for the resort of Golden Sands it is 50 minutes. Tickets can be purchased on the bus.
Alternatively, you can take one of the yellow taxis operated by Triumf Taxi (the official airport partner) from the taxi rank outside Terminal 2.
