Travelling to Vilnius
Medieval and modern, cosmopolitan and different, Vilnius is a charming blend of a mysterious past and a contemporary spirit, built at the meeting point of the Rivers Neris and Vilnia.
The Lithuanian capital is a complex of charming paradoxes that steal the show and trick the visitor. Here coexist the largest baroque Old Town in Europe (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) with the statue of Frank Zappa, the self-declared “independent republic” of the bohemian district of Užupis, Gothic and Catholic churches and futuristic skyscrapers with the largest Jewish quarter of Eastern Europe, the revolutionary spirit with pagan traditions, classicism with art nouveau. Within this explosive mixture of history and architectural eclecticism there emerges a modern city at the cutting edge of youthful entrepreneurship, theatrical innovation and a modern lifestyle that make young-at-heart Vilnius one of the most exciting destinations in Europe and beyond.
Find the best offers on flights to Vilnius at the Olympic Air site and discover the most eccentric baroque beauty of the Baltics, a surrealistic fairy tale filled with a romantic atmosphere and pleasant surprises.

The best things to do in Vilnius
Wander around the winding cobbled lanes of the medieval Old Town – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, like something straight out of a fairy tale, with atmospheric porticoes and arches. Irresistible features of the region are the dozens of Orthodox and Catholic churches and the exquisite examples of baroque architecture. This is where the city’s most important sights are located, such as the impressive building complex of Vilnius University, the Cathedral and the Gates of Dawn.
Climb up the hill with Gediminas Castle Tower, the historic symbol of the city and only remnant of the castle that stood here from the 10th to the 14th century. Inside its museum, numerous archaeological treasures narrate the history of the foundation of Vilnius by Gediminas, the Grand Duke of Lithuania. Enjoy the magical view of the roofs of the Old Town.
Take a tour of the district of Užupis. Known as the “Montmartre of Vilnius”, it is also an independent republic with its own constitution, flag, national anthem and president. The “Republic of Užupis” was founded in 1998 by the city’s artistic community as a gesture of genuine revolutionary humour. This is where the bohemian heart of Vilnius beats, with dozens of art galleries and handicrafts workshops. In any case, Užupis means creativity and uniqueness.
Visit the National Museum of Lithuania, housed in a wonderful 15th-century palace. It offers the best window onto the daily life of the Lithuanian people from the 13th century until the Second World War.
